How Built Strong Came to Be

Built Strong Athletics was born out of a need for better fitness training.

It all started with my daughter. She was in her Bantam year when she pulled a hip flexor and had to miss team tryouts. I was frustrated and questioned how a 13-year-old could be so badly injured. That was when I realized that there needed to be a place for young athletes to receive proper coaching. Too many people were taking advice from trainers who didn’t have the right qualifications or lacked a focus on body functionality. And injuries like my daughter’s were happening all too often. Kids are put on the field and practice hours of repetitive movements without any consideration for how this might cause harm. Without a focus on holistic body functionality, many athletes experience imbalances that lead to injuries. We see it in ball players, runners, skaters, and dancers. We also see it in non-athletes and everyday people who are just looking to stay healthy.

Many training techniques lack a focus on muscle sequencing, alignment, and strength.

This worsens existing imbalances and makes it easier to experience injury during workouts. I saw so many people who thought that loading up on squats or heavy lifts would make them stronger even though their body was suffering from imbalance. The lack of knowledge on body functionality drove me to create a place where people could get proper athletic training. This meant prioritizing the smallest activations and specific movements before introducing heavier repetitive workouts.

I tested this theory with my daughter and pulled her off the ice to train in a way she had never experienced before. We started with simple activations to strengthen small muscles that were weak from her injury. Afterwards, I adapted my training techniques to be more sport specific. The next year, she was faster, stronger, and injury-free. She has remained that way and earned a scholarship for a university team. I couldn’t be happier that she has a foundationally strong body to keep chasing her dreams.

What we offer at Built Strong is a totally different approach to fitness training, and our success stories are endless.

Like any profession, there are good trainers and there are mediocre trainers. Working out to look great in a bikini is one thing but training your body to be strong is a completely different endeavour that takes the knowledge of an educated and professional coach. We have created a home for everyone—athletes and non-athletes alike—to become strong. There is no cookie cutter program at Built Strong Athletics. Every client is trained in a way that addresses their personal struggles and empowers them to achieve success.

This is not your average gym and we are not your average trainers. We are highly skilled professionals who are ready to support you in meeting all your fitness goals.
